Luchita Hurtado:
Memories of her son John Mullican

Short Film, 7 minutes (2020)

John Mullican, youngest son of painter Luchita Hurtado (Venezuela, 1920-2020), shares deeply personal memories of his mother’s art practice, and how it informed her relationship to the world around her. This video was filmed in September 2020, in conjunction with LACMA’s presentation of Luchita Hurtado: I Live I Die I Will Be Reborn.

The first career survey of paintings and works on paper by the multifaceted artist, the show featured work produced over eight-decades, including Hurtado’s early forays into abstraction, her consistent use of the body as a subject, her experiments with language, and her engagement with issues of environment and ecology.

I produced and filmed this video.
